Design Thinking

Baber Baig - June 2013

Design thinking is considered to be a creative and intelligent way of solving problems. It consists of practical methodology and processes. It is a human centered approach emerged from the general understanding of design as “way of thinking“. Design thinking has been a popular term since more than a decade, because of its ability to investigate, analyze, synthesize, and provide insights to create appropriate solutions. The term comprises both thinking and action to aim at one goal. Design thinking provides us a clear understanding to approach problems and solutions in the right direction.

Design thinking is currently an integral part of teaching and learning in higher education. The process invovles ethnographic research to empathize, and define, ideate, select and implement, and it further extends to the final evaluation of the outcome or design solution. Design thinking and processes are apparently simple yet quite complex in their true nature. As said by Jeffery Veen, Math is easy; design is hard.

There are two main directions invloved in design thinking: one is ‘divergent thinking’ and the other is ‘convergent thinking’. In the begining divergent thinking is applied by expanding the scope of research to acquire maximum information and a broad range of knowledge. The purpose of divergent thinking is going wide and exploring many possibilities and solutions. Convergent thinking is contrary to divergent thinking and applied to narrow down to the core and the single best design solution. Both ways of thinking are connected to one thread of design thinking to achieve expected results. The mode of a whole process is about bringing clarity and focus to the design activity.

In the contemporary world, design thinking goes beyond the technical usefulness and business tactics to understand human needs and help designers to become more innovative and creative. Intuition and aesthetics play a major role in the process of design thinking to create unique ideas and improve our lives and the world around us.

Design thinking is not just a task of creating designs but to encourage responsible behavior in designers, because their role in society is very important. Designers become conscious of the consequences their designs have, and consider design ethics in design practice in a serious manner.

Today is the age of information overload and the messages that designers create, reach everywhere in the world. There is subconscious and psychological effect of visual material on people’s minds and their lives. Designers learn to take responsibility of the effect and shape development to stimulate change for a new and better world.

“Good design is good design thinking”.
